There are a good many positive reviews of She is Conann. You can see them at this link. Unfortunately, my own experience sitting through this French, gender-reversing take on the story was just too weird, too silly, and even at a modest hour and 47 minutes, too long.
Conann, our focal point, is going through the steps to ascend to the throne of baddest lady in some kind of Hell. We follow her through time and many trials- we see her at age 15, 25, 35, etc. She is accompanied by a dog-faced guide (literally wearing a realistic looking dog mask) who also serves as the viewers narrator periodically.
She goes through her incarnations and lesbian loves in director Bertrand Mandico’s Queer take on the story. They call it poetic, but the subtitles read like bad, mannered narrative. I honestly struggled to stay with it.
She is Conann is now on VOD on AppleTV, Amazon, GooglePlay, Vudu, and Vimeo.. It got an award at Cannes. But let’s just say it isn’t for everybody…including me.
