There’s something a little endearing about this slapdash, frenetic chase movie, and I suspect it’s all about John Cena and Awkwafina, the co-stars.
In near-future Los Angeles, in a state desperate for money and a population in the same boat- an annual ginormous lottery makes one lucky person rich, but there’s a catch: anyone can kill the winner (the only rule is no guns) before sunset that day and claim the winnings for themselves.
I know-sounds very dark, doesn’t it?
So, when newcomer to town plot-stumbles into the winning ticket, she has to learn quickly that staying alive is the only thing that matters. She also learns that there are services, mostly crooked, that will protect her for a cut of the earnings.
In this case, a sincere John Cena will end up in the protector role and we’re off to the races. The pair avoid trouble and, especially, must avoid a really nasty villain and his henchmen to make it to the finish line without getting finished off.
I think the film should have leaned a bit more into its potential strength (comedy) and less into the dystopian stuff. After all, we’ve already seen The Purge, right?
But as a weeknight, layback and chill kind of view, I think it achieves that kind of success.
So, a friendly 2 ½ out of 4 stars for Jackpot, which can be seen on Amazon Prime.
