Did he kill his wife or not? That’s the central question in “Gone Girl,” the new movie adapted from the worldwide best-selling novel. Well, it’s the central question for half of the film, before a big “reveal”, and a shift in tone and plot—none of which will be disclosed here.
Gillian Flynn adapts her novel for the screen in a compressed but efficient way—keeping this whodunit kind of fun. Director David Fincher almost steals the show out from under Flynn with his recognizable fingerprints on every frame of under-lit, gorgeous composition, haunting music by repeat collaborator Trent Reznor and, some would argue, a point of view that is more sympathetic to males, less so to females.
