The secret to enjoying ‘Jolt’ for the 90 minute action romp that it is? Just go with its ridiculous premise from the first few minutes and hang on. In for a penny, in for a pound.
Kate Beckinsale plays Lindy, in a role that reminded me of Charlize Theron’s in Atomic Blonde, as a smart, capable woman with a longtime problem: when she gets angry and starts raging (and it doesn’t take much to pull her trigger) then she kicks asses with the enthusiasm of the Hulk, only with blonde hair instead of green skin.
Her psychiatrist (Stanley Tucci, slumming, but having fun) has designed a special harness for her outfitted with multiple electrodes and complete with a little handheld remote. When she finds herself boiling, she simply presses the remote button to give herself a, wait for it….jolt of electricity that stuns her out of her fury.
It’s a funny premise, and it works because director Tanya Wexler mixes it with skull-crushing fight scenes and a schlocky action flick aesthetic – if the film were to take itself seriously for even a minute, the whole thing would fall apart, but it doesn’t.
There is a plot, however: after a rare date that isn’t disastrous for her, Lindy likes the confident, self-deprecating accountant named Justin (Jai Courtney of “Suicide Squad”) and agrees to see him again. The problem is that Justin is found dead the next day and Lindy now takes on the role of a roided Nancy Drew.
As she works on the mystery of who killed the accountant, a pair of detectives played by Bobby Cannavale and Laverne Cox follow her in hopes that she’ll help them solve the case for them, or at least lead them in the right direction. Or something.
Babies will be tossed (unharmed), cars will be crashed, asses will be kicked.
I don’t know if Amazon Prime is setting this up as a potential series or set of sequel films, but they should. Lindy would make a fun character to waste time with again sometime.
