The first thing to know is that the 2021 version (and Oscar-nominated) Nightmare Alley is not a remake of the 1947 film.
In fact, both films are separate adaptations of the 1946 novel. The great Guillermo del Toro has made a darker, more violent version that was my favorite film of the year-here’s my review: https://www.entertainmentordie.com/2021/12/nightmare/
The 1947 version starred Tyrone Power as Stanton Carlyle – the carny con-man that Bradley Cooper brought to life in the most recent adaptation. The same basic framework is present in both films, but each director, based on his artistic vision, budget and available technology at the time, has significantly changed details within.
A friend of mine let me know that the 1947 version is available to watch for free, and the video and audio qualities are excellent – surprisingly good.
I invite you to click the player below and watch the entire film. As for me- it’s time to find that book and read it!
