Creepy, not terrifying, The Twin, nevertheless delivers mild chills and a satisfying final act. It’s not a cheap genre throwaway, it’s a real movie
Yes, it employs all the usual tropes, but then it goes further to reveal that which you did not necessarily predict. I liked it.
Anthony and Rachel and their twins, Elliot and Nathan are an idyllic New York family, but a sudden car accident leaves Nathan dead and the other three members of the family deeply grieving. Especially the mother (Teresa Palmer).
For no great reason, other than the film is a Scandanavian production (though it is 100% in English) the family move to the gorgeous countryside of Finland and into a nice house.
As they move in, Elliot insists that a second bed be set up in his room for Nathan. Allowing some latitude for the kid to adjust, the parents agree.
My regular readers know that I am averse to any spoilers, and so I will hold short of specifics. I think the film works because, no matter whether it gets supernatural or something “from the movies,” the characters are authentic – their story rooted in a reality that any viewer can indentitify.
And that’s what makes it a worthy watch, if not a hair-raising horror tale.
The Twin is streaming on Shudder from May 6th | 3 out of 4 Stars| Some gore.
