I know the new Disney+ series has taken a lot of nasty hits from critics, but I believe the fan boys are not using a fair measuring framework for their complaints.
Settle down, Marvel fan boys; this is basically a half hour sitcom. It’s light on its feet, slightly naughty with language, but also kind of wholesome and, obviously, a good representation of female empowerment. The industry has gotten better, but they can do better and She-Hulk moves the needle.
Tatiana Maslany Gets All The Credit for Being Relatable and Real
Even the subtitle “Attorney at Law” is a sort of wink at previous TV shows, NOT big screen movies. Jennifer Walters is the title character(s) who is a top notch lawyer who just happens to be the cousin of Bruce Banner, who we all know by now, is The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) plays an important part in Episode One.
Without any spoilers, let’s just say that the first episode is basically an origin story for the title character and that we are also introduced to “Smart Hulk,” in which the big, green guy has a much more recognizable Ruffalo face, he even wears eyeglasses sometimes for the full nerdy scientist vibe. Other Marvel heroes are name-checked (Tony Stark, Steve Rogers).
I’m, not saying it’s great, I’m saying that if you don’t compare it to a 100 million dollar Marvel theatrical release, you might just enjoy this in the spirit its presented: silly fun with Easter eggs galore.
