They were everywhere in the late 60s: slowed down and amped up covers like “You Keep Me Hangin’ On” were hugely popular. Quentin Tarantino used it in ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ a few years ago.
They recorded five albums from 1967 until their first break up in 1970. You would have turned on the TV and seen them on Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin Show, David Frost, and Where The Action Is among others.
I worked a show with these guys about 10 years ago – the energy of Mark Stein, Vince Martell, and legendary drummer Carmine Appice was intense…and LOUD!
The guys continue to tour, but their latest news is a re-mastered releaser of VANILLA ZEPPELIN on Golden Robot records. They recently released 3 re-mastered Led Zeppelin classics: ‘Rock and Roll,’ ‘Immigrant Song’ and ‘Ramble On’ in the lead up to the full album, available digitally on September 30th.
Some might find it sacrosanct to cover the classics of Led Zeppelin, and they definitely are not trying to sound like Zep, none of them. Appice’s intro to ‘Rock and Roll’ doesn’t sound like John Bonham’s signature pounding, and it’s not supposed to. No one is aping Plant’s vocal stylings, either.
“This is Led Zeppelin done ‘Fudge’ style and fully re-mastered. Vanilla Fudge roll these classics out in their own way, with soaring organ interludes and adding their soul and funked up influence giving these songs a new life and identity of their own.”
Here’s the track listing:
1. Rock and Roll
2. Immigrant Song
3. Ramble On
4. Dancing Days?
5. Black Mountain Way
