I’ll make this quick because I never want to be a bully – just a consumer advocate. This is bad, dude. Really, really bad. At least one other person on the internet likes it, so don’t listen to me, but…
Firstly, the titular character is known in the film as a “Skunk Ape.” Now, that’s something that could have worked as farce with, say, a Kevin Bacon or Vince Vaughn in the lead. But I’m afraid the cast seem to be almost all semi-pro actors, at best (Lauren Crandall as Sarah, Julian Green as Brandon, and Mike Reed as Tim.)
They don’t know how to treat the script as the potentially delightful trash it is.
This is yet another one of those “found footage” movies about a group of a few students who have set out to make a documentary about the so-called “Bigfoot of the Everglades.” Several young women have gone missing in the nearby town of Ochopee, Florida, and Sara thinks she might know who (or what?) did it.
Because the budget is small, a lot of time is wasted inside motel rooms and the woods – places where you don’t have to pay for a location.
Apparently, there was no visual effects budget, either, for once we finally see the Skunk Ape, it looks suspiciously like an amateur actor in a ragtag money suit with cheap make-up effects applied.
Of course, you can’t have one of these films with something “deeper under the surface” going on, but I leave those revelations to the patient souls who make it that far into the film.
And now I will stop because, as a quick glance will reveal, this site has mostly middling to positive reviews on it. Not because I like every movie, but because I do my best to steer clear of things like this.
I’m sorry?
