As a stand-up comedienne, Mo’Nique is an amazing actress. Even a decade later, her Oscar-winning turn as a dramatic actress towers above this monotonous loop that is her long-awaited comedy special.
Her astounding performance in Lee Daniel’s Precious won her the Best Supporting actress prize and proved that comedy should be he day job—at most. But it didn’t work out that way. When discovered that Netflix was going to give her pennies on the dollar for a comedy special, as compared to Dave Chappelle, Chis Rock and Amy Schumer. By the way, all much bigger names in comedy.
The whole story blew up and everyone from Oprah, to Tyler Perry to Daniels were decidedly not on her side in this game – the whole thing broke down and, not coincidentally, the world hasn’t heard much from her since early 2010. She claims to have been blacklisted by the industry.
So now she sashays onto the comedy stage – walking, stalking, dropping N-words like Katt Williams, but not with the same funny tone. She sounds angry. And it’s a comedy special. I mean, she tells semi-humorous stories, but they aren’t jokes – they don’t invoke belly laughs.
I really, really liked her – I voted for her to win every award for which I was an eligible voter. She burned the screen up without breaking a sweat.
But to sit through this felt like a long wait for her to get to her side of the story – and, incidentally, it seems that hatchets have been buried, bad feelings have improved and….hey, this special is ON Netflix. So, you know, even “the story” comes with less bang than the long story about her journey to learn how to fellate gentlemen over the years.
Anyway, I hope she gets acting gigs out of this – serious roles, not comedic, But there isn’t much special about this special.
