When the first “American Pie” movie was released in 1999, it seemed to be riding a wave of “more is more” that had started with “There’s Something About Mary,” a film that took onscreen bodily fluids to an unprecedented level, yet became a huge box office hit. It was also, it should be said, funny.
What that first Pie had that other bathroom humor films lacked, was heart—there was a certain tenderness in the relationship between Father (Eugene Levy) and son (Jason Biggs) that gave the otherwise teen sex comedy a sentimental undertone. And…it was funny.
